Background: The history of the Struggle in Palestine and Sudan
Palestine
More than seventy-five years have passed since the mass displacement of Palestinians. According to Refugees International, nearly 6 million registered Palestinian refugees live across the world. Palestinians are considered one of the largest stateless communities worldwide and they constitute the world’s longest-prolonged refugee crisis, their struggle has been continuously dismissed as more displacement crises unfolded. Over the years, the Israeli occupation has systematically displaced thousands of Palestinians from their lands and illegally appropriated them to establish settlements reserved only for Israeli settlers. Entire Palestinian communities have suffered forced evictions, the demolition of their homes, and disruption of their livelihoods.
Sudan
Since the conflict erupted in Sudan on April 15, 2023, 2,231,523 internal displacements have been documented in the country as of June 28, 2023. This number is almost similar to the total internal displacements caused by conflict and violence in Sudan over the past decade. These numbers represent the highest recorded figure for internal displacement in Sudan due to conflict and violence since the IDMC commenced monitoring the country in 2008. As of March 2023, a month preceding the outbreak of conflict, over 3.8 million individuals were internally displaced throughout Sudan. With the ongoing widespread conflict, this figure will probably escalate significantly by the year’s end. However, access constraints are not allowing current data collection efforts to fully unpack how many people have been newly displaced.
